Dog Septic Tank

Dog Septic Tank

We don’t have to let the dog in or out. Geordie can let himself out through the doggie door, run down the steps Cliff added to the porch and take care of necessary business in his own yard. But then we have to take care of it.

They should make a dog septic system. And they do.

Septic Tank Diagram*

This is a simple diagram of a septic tank. It then drains out to a drain field.

Septic System Diagram**

The drain field, or leaching field can be pretty big.

Doggie Septic Systems use the same principles, but they don’t have to be big. A house septic system serves everything in the house. The dog septic system is for dog poo and that’s it.

In-ground Doggie Septic Systems

An In-ground Doggie Septic System “works like a miniature septic tank, utilizing natural bacteria and enzyme cultures to reduce dog waste to a ground absorbing liquid. Simply shovel stools into the system; occasionally add water and the digester.” Doggie Dooley

They all have the same basic concept; a container with a lid for the dog poo to go into. The “drainfield” is a hole under the the tank.

Then you add something into the tank that breaks down organic solids into gas and liquid. The Waste Terminator Tablets from Doggie Dooley contain “billions of helpful bacteria per tablet to break down dog waste in the Doggie Dooley.”

They make  septic system additives for house septic systems, too. There are all different kinds. Some are a combination of enzymes or bacteria. Others have calcium or sodium bicarbonate to raise the pH levels if it gets too low for bacteria. Flocculants, surfactants or biosurfactants reduce surface tension to help solids breakdown and to help bacteria digest organic matter.  Some have minerals, carbon, grain, meat, protein and other forms of food for the bacteria so it can thrive. Some people say that you can go longer without pumping your septic tank if you add some product or other. Then, other people say the exact opposite.

  • Looks like a plastic tank
  • Foot-operated lid opener

Both of these are for one large dog or two small dogs. We have one middle-sized dog and two small occasional dogs. (We watch my daughter’s little poodle and peekapoo whenever they travel.)

It might be big enough, but I also might want another dog. (No might… I want another dog.)

Biomaster Pet Waste Wizard

Not In-Ground

The Biomaster Pet Waste Wizard is like a dog poo recycle bin. It is almost all above ground. You only have the bottom below ground level. Otherwise it works about the same. You add Pet Waste Wizard digester sachets. The dog poo breaks down, liquid goes out through the bottom and earthworms take care of it from there. It says that it improves the soil and that you should move it to different areas in your yard to organically fertilize.

DIY Dog Septic Tanks or Dog Poo Recycling Bins

There are a lot of instructions on how to build your own above ground or below ground dog septic tank using large PVC pipe, a modified rain barrel or garbage can with a lid, a 5-gallon bucket… so many ideas. Some are way more complicated than others.

Other instruction use the same parts you would use for any other septic system using concrete, PVC pipe and a drainfield. I am fairly confident that Cliff is not going to get that involved.

As many dogs as you want

This seems kinda ingenious. I never even thought of it.

The Doggie Doo Drain is like a funnel with a plug that screws into the clean out pipe. You open the plug, put in the dog poo, rinse with the hose and put the plug back in. That’s it. No additives. No need to dig a 4-foot deep hole in our very dense rocky soil.

Doggie Doo Drain Dog Waste Sewer Line Attachment

The Doggie Doo Drain easily attaches to your sewer/septic clean-out where the dog waste is deposited directly into the sewer where waste belongs. The Doggie Doo Drain requires no assembly and it installs in minutes! Accepts 3 and 4 inch sizes Sewer/ Septic Clean-out.

All of the reviewers love it.
