The silt fence had some leaves washed up against it, but there really wasn\u2019t a disturbed area yet to cause silt.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13392\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13392\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/silt.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The silt is coming from upstream<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There was some silt in our brook, but it was coming from upstream.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13404\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13404\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/collapsed_culvert.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This hole gushed water when we had heavy rain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But during the rain, there had been a LOT of water sheeting across the back field. Some water was coming through the culvert, but not much.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13418\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13418\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/collapsed_culvert-flood.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Water rushing out of the hole where the culvert is crushed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is the hole with the water rushing up and out of it.<\/p>\n<p>The culvert was there when we first bought our land. It was clogged and in some areas it was crushed and it wasn&#8217;t really working anymore. This was one of the items on our wish list that we took back off to keep the estimate affordable. We decided that it really was necessary. And it would cost a lot less now, while the equipment was here than later when they would have to bring machines back. Well here\u2019s one reason it might have crushed. It\u2019s not actually culvert. It is something else. See the piece of equipment in the background on the right? That is a Topcon RL-H5A Rotary Laser. It is a \u201cself-levelling rotating laser for general construction.\u201d It is \u201cOne of the most common uses of lasers in construction&#8230; for leveling and grading.\u201d Taylor has used this throughout the project to make sure water will run the right direction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13397\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13397\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/waterway-final-b.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All the way to the end of our land!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here we are, up to the final edge of our land! The waterway is wider with high banks.<\/p>\n<p>It took way less time than we thought and we were really relieved by the final bill. Much lower than estimated and we are so so so happy with the results. If you live around here, I absolutely recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/gradingwnc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fowler Excavating<\/strong><\/a>. We want another flood so we can test it out. But not right now.
