Hurricane Helene flooded areas that are not in a flood zone and didn&#8217;t flood areas that are in a flood zone.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15100\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15100\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15100\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cabin-flood-matthew.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flood from Hurricane Matthew in 2016 at Meadowbrook Cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hurricane Matthew dropped 17&#8243; of rain. The road flooded, but the water never got any higher than this. It was not even close to the garage, the lowest building.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15097\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15097\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cabin-flood-b.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flood from Hurricane Florence in 2018 at Meadowbrook Cabin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hurricane Florence dropped as much as 24&#8243; of rain in one day. The brook turned into a torrent, but the water still did not get close to the cabin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15098\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15098\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cabin-flood.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flood from Hurricane Florence in 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Florence was the record for rainfall, with over 35&#8243; over seven days in some areas. Still, this was the highest the water got.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15096\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15096\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/stream.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Streambank Restoration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2020, Hendersonville made changes to stabilize the streambanks. Water seems to flow better, not backing up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The log cabin is on a higher spot surrounded by flood plain. This was already documented when I bought the cabin. \u201c\u2026the LOMR or LOMA issued determined that the lots or structures involved are out of the Special Flood Hazard Area, as shown on the FIRM.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15021\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15021\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/log_cabin-a.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Water had never even gotten to the grass around the log cabin before. It went all the way up inside the cabin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before Helene showed up, we had already had three days of rain. Then the storm dropped almost 22 more inches and did it fast. The water was a LOT higher than it ever had been before.<\/p>\n<p>The flood water was over the porch at the log cabin. It was feet deep in the garage and in the 2-story building Cliff used as his office.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15017\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15017\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/log_cabin-next_door.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the house on the other side of the log cabin. Downstairs floods pretty often, but it has never come in the upstairs before. Not even close.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This house is just over the brook from the log cabin. \/>You can see how high the water got on the brick house to the right and the mud on the bushes around the cabin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The brook is still a little higher than is typical in this photo, but can you even imagine how high it got to get up to the upstairs of the brick house on the right and over the porch of the log cabin?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15016\" owns the cabin says that it is OK. It has a lot of supports underneath.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15046\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15046\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.projectsmallhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/cabin-under_porch.jpg?resize=500%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They have pulled off the trim on the cabin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is under the porch.<\/p>\n<p>The houses on Somerset are in the flood zone and didn&#8217;t flood.
