Last night (March 9, 2026) our local channel 13 news, News 13 (WLOS)<\/strong> had a brief report on what is going on with FEMA trailers and campers. They showed them being moved out to be auctioned off.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of FEMA trailers that were placed in Hickory after Helene are being moved out to be sold at auction. More than 240 families living in them have moved to long-term housing.<\/p>\n

65 families have opted to purchase their FEMA unit at discounted prices. The empty trailers are being taken to Alabama, Tennessee and Maryland. They\u2019ll be posted online to be sold as excess government property.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The video shows both on-frame trailers and smaller campers being moved.<\/p>\n

Update: just got this information from FEMA about the homes being moved out of Hickory<\/p>\n

\u201cAll 243 eligible households were licensed-in to a FEMA-provided temporary unit. As of March 5, 220 families have moved out of temporary units and into longer-term solutions. In North Carolina, FEMA is offering the sale of a unit to the occupant as a housing solution. To date, 65 families have purchased their FEMA unit. FEMA continues working with the state and disaster case managers to help survivors find housing solutions.<\/p>\n

The units moving out of Hickory are excess property. Excess units are posted for sale on GSAauctions.gov. This is the federal government’s normal process for excessing government property.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breaking Hickory- FEMA homes and campers used after Helene in western NC are being moved out to be sold at auction. Drivers say some are heading to Selma Alabama others are off to Greenville Tennessee and Cumberland Maryland. Trucks are lined up this morning to pick them up now. Reaching out to FEMA to learn more and hoping to talk with folks who may have used one of the homes here.<\/p>\n

FEMA works to remove temporary housing from western NC after Helene<\/p>\n

HICKORY, N.C. \u2014 FEMA homes and campers could be seen being moved out of Hickory on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Officials told Channel 9\u2019s Dave Faherty that the homes that were used to house people in western NC after Hurricane Helene are being moved out to be sold at auction.<\/p>\n

The 243 households were licensed into a FEMA-provided temporary unit, officials said. As of Thursday, 220 families had moved out of the temporary housing and into longer-term housing.<\/p>\n

FEMA also offered the sale of the home to its occupants as a housing solution. Sixty-five families have purchased their FEMA unit, officials said.<\/p>\n

Officials said they are continuing to work with state and disaster case managers to help the storm survivors find housing.<\/p>\n

Several drivers told Faherty that some of the homes are heading to Selma, Alabama, some are going to Greenville, Tennessee, and others are going to Cumberland, Maryland.<\/p>\n

But the rest are being auctioned off.<\/p>\n

FEMA officials said the excess units are posted on GSAauctions.gov.<\/p>\n

Currently there is only one trailer listed on Government Surplus Auctions. No campers are shown listed yet. \u00a0I searched by a lot of different words. “FEMA” and “Trailer” are the ones that got any results.<\/p>\n

It has a bid of $5000, but there is a higher reserve. If the GSA Auctions reserve price is not met, they don’t accept the highest bid. They give the bidder (or bidders) another chance to bid higher. If they still don’t meet the reserve, they will re-list the trailer (or whatever).<\/p>\n
