The Small House Movement isn\u2019t new. Historically, many homes were small. People built what they could, then added on as they could afford to. This small house was built in 1930, with wood lap siding and a corrugated metal roof. The chimney at one end vents a stove. With hurricanes prevalent on the Sea Islands, it has shutters fit into the windows.<\/p>\n

You can imagine many of the floor plans on Pinterest in this little cabin.<\/p>\n

This is the William Simmons House. It is typical of Gullah houses on the S.C. Sea Islands from the end of the Civil War to the mid-20th<\/sup> century. It is on Gumtree Road on Hilton Head Island.<\/p>\n

\u200bMany people grew up in small houses like this. \u200bSome of them are being restored. This one will be part of the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island. It will recreate what life was like on Hilton Head Island before the bridge.<\/p>\n
