Murphy Bed DIY Kits

Fold away beds have been around for hundreds of years. Murphy beds, also called pull-down or wall beds fold up against the wall when they are not being used. Some fold up into furniture. Others fold into a closet or alcove.

William Lawrence Murphy invented a fold-up bed around 1900 to create living space in his one room apartment. He received patent in 1912 for a pivot and counterbalanced system to make a fold up bed easier to lift. Other patents followed.
The biggest advantage of a Murphy bed over a sofa bed or futon is the mattress. Unlike a modified mattress that has to fold, a Murphy bed can use any mattress. These kits secure to the studs in the wall and include gas struts to make it easy to fold down the bed and push it back out of the way in the morning.

If you have considered a murphy bed as a small space solution, Murphy Door makes DIY kits to build one in place.

The kit includes the parts that make the bed easy to lift.

The bed can use a normal mattress, so it is more comfortable than a futon.

The Installation Video will walk you through what is involved and help you decide whether this is a project for you.
The video shows how you assemble the bed lying on its face with the back that will be facing the wall up. That way you can just lift it into place when you are done.
The kit comes with the wood pre-drilled. Some steps are easier if you have someone to help you, for example when you align the cabaneo screws to the pre-drilled holes in the top and sides. Included gas struts are installed to the threaded eyelets in the bed frame near the headboard.

Murphy Door makes DIY Kits to build your own Murphy Beds They can be ordered complete, with everything you need to build your fold-away bed or hardware kits with all of the specialty hardware you need to build a custom murphy bed. Both are available in Twin, Full, Queen and King sizes.

FINISHING
Wood pieces should be painted or stained within 10 day of receipt, prior to assembly. Commercial grade furniture paints and stains are required. DO NOT use water-based paints.
MATTRESS
Choose an appropriately size mattress for your frame, 8″ to 11″ thick. The mattress should be rigid enough to stand on end without sagging or doubling over. We recommend using a coil mattress but some memory foam mattresses will work. Bed linens may be stored on the mattress.
DO NOT store pillows on the bed inside of the bed cabinet.
