So the last post led to questions about living on a boat. I don’t live on a boat. I have never lived on a boat and I don’t want to live on a boat.
When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, I knew people that lived on boats. Not houseboats, one couple lived on a large sailboat, one couple lived on a retired fishing boat with two medium-sized dogs.
The couple living on the sailboat rented private dock space behind someone’s house. It was not cheap. I don’t remember what they paid, but I remember I was astonished. The rent included power and a place to park their car. They could get to their temp jobs during the week and sail on the weekends.
The other couple spent about half the year in the Caribbean. The rest of the time lived aboard at a boat storage facility, parked next to other boats under a roof while they earned enough money to support them for the rest of the year. Part of that time their boat was out of the water for repairs. I have no idea what this cost. Their van was parked in the parking lot for the whole marina. They had folding bicycles to reach the car. The marina rent included power. There was also a laundry and sewage disposal.
A lot of the houseboats on Facebook Marketplace already have fees paid for where they are docked or stored.

This houseboat is under a roof in a marina a lot like where my friends lived.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Stored in Covered Slip
This is kinda like where my friends lived. They knew their neighbors living on the other nearby boats.

Yes, where they lived was really this close together. But the rest of the year they were on the Atlantic. Six months to refill the piggy bank and avoid hurricane season.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Interior
This is what the interior of this houseboat looks like. It has three rooms. Houseboats have a LOT more room inside than a sailboat or a yacht or a retrofitted fishing boat.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Kitchen
There is an air conditioner. The kitchen even has an oven and fridge with freezer.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Livingroom
There is an indoor living area and an outdoor living area.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Bedroom
The bedroom has a queen-sized bed. There is another air-conditioner for the bedroom.

If I lived here, I would want curtains. They don’t need privacy or to sleep in.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Bathroom
There is a full bathroom, with a toilet.
1971 Stardust Cruiser Houseboat Bathtub
The bathroom even has a bath tub.

The bathroom is a separate room for privacy.
Stardust Cruisers Houseboat
The houseboat is at Sun Life Lake Hartwell Marina. They have a lot of amenities, “wet slips, dry stack storage, boat rentals, Boathouse Grill, and more.”
Covered and Uncovered Wet Slips
Slips accommodating boats up to 70′ Length Overall (LOA)
Shore Power (50amp, 30amp, 20amp)
Fresh Water Connections
Deep Water Slips
But they don’t allow you to live full time on your boat at the marina. “The marina is a facility for boaters to access and use the lake.” There are homes with lake access on Lake Hartwell where you may be able to work something out.
Hunter 34.5 Sailboat
The other photo in the featured image is of a sailboat for sale on Facebook Marketplace. It looks a lot like where my friends lived aboard their sailboat.

I need this gone. Hunter 34.5. Lots of new additions. Sails great. Needs some minor engine work and bottom cleaning. Batteries are shot. Lots of extra stuff to go with it. [hidden information]. Charleston Sc.
The inside doesn’t look much like their boat. The one below looks more like it.
1976 Alberg 37 MKII Sailboat
1976 Alberg 37 MKII Sailboat
New price $[hidden information] ALBERG 37 MKII The Alberg 37 is a highly regarded classic Bluewater design – solidly built, full keel, protected rudder and prop and with a hull designed to keep her people safe and comfortable in all conditions. The beautiful classic lines are paired with long overhangs and an easily driven hull that is lovely to look at. She slices through waves easily and has brought us great joy. We were in the process of finishing her refit, but due to sudden horrific circumstances at our home we sadly need to sell her. She has been loved and maintained. She is currently docked at a marina in Beaufort, SC. Please DM me regarding any questions or to set up a viewing appointment. If it is still on Marketplace, then it is still for sale.
