A New Project – A 1988 Scotty Serro Sportsman Camping Trailer
We have been talking about and looking at campers for years. Cliff wants a project camper, sort of a hobby project.
Last summer we rented a camper and took it across North Carolina and up the Outer Banks. A rental camper is a great idea. You pay for the week you are going to use. Someone else makes the payments, pays the insurance, does the maintenance…
I was surprised how much it costs to stay at campgrounds. They were often reserved ahead with no availability. The other thing we found out is, many campgrounds will not let you stay if your camper is over 10 years old. Not a problem with the one we rented, but it would be a problem with the one we were thinking about buying.
Cliff still wanted to re-build one. He had lots of ideas. We were also astonished at what people think their old campers are worth. Add that to what it is going to cost to fix them up… I argued for just renting one any time we want to go anywhere. The owners will even take it where you want to go and have it already set up when you get there. That is not at all what Cliff has in mind.
Then Friday an old Scotty showed up on Facebook Marketplace. We had a Scotty when I was a kid. The price was right.
Up for grabs…..this Sweet 1988 Scotty Serro Sportsman!

Our son-in-law pulled our new to us Scotty home for us
We drove down to look at it and I just love it. My son-in-law pulled it home for us.
Our new to us Scotty
It is parked by the workshop now, plugged in.
Labeled Susan & Bob on the way to Fla. Scotty Camper, Yellow Canoe
This is my parent’s Scotty.
Google Lens say; “The image features a Cadillac, likely a Fleetwood Brougham model from the late 1970s or early 1980s, possibly around 1978 or 1981.”
Scotty Camper Mom and Dad, Jessica and Tom
Mom and Dad’s Scotty Camper with a different awning. The awning is the biggest difference I am finding in the photos of Scotty campers in the photo albums.

Photos seem to date from the ’70s and ’80s, maybe into the early ’90s.
Scotty Camper in front of Barn House
There is no awning on this Scotty.
Scotty Camper in front of Barn House – closer
Here is a closer look. I don’t even see the part that holds an awning.
Google Lens thinks this is an SJ series Jeep Cherokee, produced from 1974 through 1983. If so, that helps date the photo.
Station Wagon Towing Scotty Camper
The awning shown in this older photo looks the same kind of awning the camper we just bought came with.
Google Lens say; “The image features a vintage Serro Scotty travel trailer, likely a Sportsman model, towed by a classic Ford Country Sedan station wagon from the 1960s or 1970s, likely a 1970 model given the visible styling cues.”
I found a lot of photos of Scotty trailers in Gramma’s photo albums. Gramma and Grampa had a Scotty, too? Or it’s the same one with changes.
Where is this Scotty?
This seems to be behind Gramma and Grampa’s house on Maple Street in Brevard, NC. The house behind matches what I found on Google Street View.
Scotty at a Beach, 1974
Google Lens says; “The image shows a classic Ford Country Squire station wagon, likely from the late 1960s or early 1970s, pulling a travel trailer on a beach.”
Scotty Awning
And I don’t know these people. The child may be my aunt. This is likely family in Virginia.
Scotty Camper with Awning Dad and Rob
This looks like my dad and my brother under the same awning. Or the same type of awning.
Grampa Inside a Scotty Camper
I don’t know whether this is Mom and Dad’s camper or Gramma and Grampa’s camper. The photo is later.
